Mongar

The start of the east, reached by one of the great mountain roads.

The drive from Bumthang to Mongar crosses Thrumshingla at 3,750 m and then drops thousands of metres down a cliff road. It is one of the most spectacular stretches of driving in the Himalayas.

Mongar itself is a newer town, but the dzong is worth an hour and it is the gateway to the far east.
