Festival Tours

Festivals, or tshechus, in Bhutan are rich and happy expressions of its ancient Buddhist culture. They are held in all districts, and most are in honour of Guru Rinpoche, the saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan in the eighth century.

Tshechus take place on auspicious days in the Bhutanese calendar and last several days, in which a series of masked dances and rituals are performed.

The rare beauty of this land is reflected in the spirit of the people, as you will discover at every turn and especially at a tshechu. People's deep faith and devotion make these festivals a special occasion. At the same time, it is an opportunity to join hundreds, sometimes thousands, of Bhutanese taking part in an important religious and social occasion that often has the atmosphere of a carnival.

Festival dates move with the lunar calendar and are confirmed only a few months ahead, so festival trips need booking earlier than most.
