Bumthang is really four valleys (Chokhor, Tang, Ura and Chhume) and the religious heartland of the country. Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang date to the seventh and eighth centuries.
It is high, cold and open, with buckwheat fields, apple orchards and the only breweries and cheese-makers in Bhutan. Most of the best festivals happen here in autumn.
